German Schloss Fasanerie may be taken over by the state

February 9, 2026

EICHENZELL, Germany — The future of Schloss Fasanerie, one of Germany’s many Baroque palaces, has become the subject of cultural and political discussion. The debate follows an initiative by the current owner, which has proposed a greater role for the state in the stewardship of its historic castles, parks and museum collections — potentially including Schloss Fasanerie near Eichenzell in the Fulda district.

House of Hesse

Representatives of the noble House of Hesse, led by Landgraf Donatus of Hesse, have approached the Hessian state government with a partnership proposal under which the state would assume responsibility for selected heritage sites managed by the family’s cultural foundations. The aim is to secure these properties for the long term while ensuring they remain open and accessible to the public. Schloss Fasanerie, renowned for its art collections, historic interiors and landscaped park, is among the properties under consideration.

Local focus on continuity and access

Local authorities have emphasised the importance of continuity. Johannes Rothmund, mayor of Eichenzell, stressed that Schloss Fasanerie would remain the property of the Kulturstiftung des Hauses Hessen (Culture Foundation of the House of Hesse). Existing cooperative arrangements, he noted, could continue within any new governance framework. Rothmund highlighted the palace’s role as a freely accessible cultural landmark for both local residents and visitors.

Response from the state government

Hessian Minister-President Boris Rhein welcomed the proposal as a significant cultural policy initiative, describing it as a gesture of trust with “considerable cultural-political importance.” The state government has indicated that it will now carefully examine the proposal, taking into account the historical value of the sites involved and the long-term implications for heritage management.

The discussion comes at a time when many historic estates across Europe face increasing financial and organisational challenges. For Eichenzell and the wider Fulda region, the outcome of negotiations between the House of Hesse and the state government could prove decisive in shaping the future stewardship of one of the region’s most important heritage sites.

One of the highlights of the annual journey back in time to the 18th century at Fasanerie Castle in the municipality of Eichenzell near Fulda is the re-enactment of a battle from the American War of Independence, the Revolutionary War. The background to this is that the organiser, the Society for Hessian Military and Civil History, has placed an emphasis on remembering all the Hessian soldiers who fought for the English crown in North America at that time.
