Beginning 2026, Prince Georg Friedrich of Prussia will become the sole owner of Hohenzollern Castle, the ancestral seat of the House of Hohenzollern. The news was made public through the official Instagram account of the House of Hohenzollern. Effective December 31, 2025, Prince Karl Friedrich of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen has transferred his one-third ownership share of the castle to his cousin.
Full responsibility to Prince Georg Friedrich
Since the castle’s joint reconstruction in the mid-19th century, a third of the famous Burg had belonged to the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen line, whose former principality was incorporated into the Kingdom of Prussia in 1849. With the completion of the transfer, full responsibility for the operation, preservation, and cultural development of the castle will pass to Prince Georg Friedrich.
Statements from both family heads
Prince Georg Friedrich expressed his gratitude:
“I am deeply grateful to my cousin for his great support and our shared commitment to our ancestral home. Our close partnership has been essential in preserving and further developing the castle. Our cooperation will continue in many areas.”
Prince Karl Friedrich commented on his future plans:
“I would like to thank my cousin for many years of constructive collaboration. In the future, I intend to focus on the preservation and development of Sigmaringen Castle.”
Continued collaboration
The two cousins continue to work together in their roles on the board of the Princess Kira of Prussia Foundation, which is also based at Hohenzollern Castle.
A leading private museum in Germany
With more than 300,000 visitors annually, Hohenzollern Castle ranks among Germany’s most successful private museums. Earlier in the spring, Prince Georg Friedrich reached a historic agreement resolving long-standing property matters. As a result, large parts of the former royal Prussian collection were incorporated into the newly established Hohenzollern Art Heritage Foundation, where he serves as Deputy Chair of the Board of Trustees.
