ANDALUSIA, Spain — A spectacular medieval festival will transform the Spanish Castillo Almodóvar del Río into a stage for knights, battles and historical reenactments this spring. The event, announced by the castle and local authorities, will take place on 14 and 15 March 2026, inviting visitors to experience life in the Middle Ages within the walls of one of southern Spain’s most impressive fortresses.
Located about 20–25 kilometres west of Sevilla, the Castillo Almodóvar del Río rises above the Guadalquivir Valley and is widely considered one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Spain. During the two-day event, its towers, courtyards and battlements will be animated by costumed performers, historical characters and immersive activities recreating the atmosphere of the 14th century.
Knights, camps and medieval life
The highlight of the festival is a great medieval tournament, where visitors can watch staged combat between armoured knights and warriors demonstrating historical fighting techniques. The castle grounds will also host a period military camp, allowing guests to see how soldiers lived, trained and prepared for battle in the Middle Ages.

Beyond the tournament, the festival offers a variety of activities designed to bring medieval life vividly to life. Visitors can encounter characters from the period, explore historical demonstrations and learn about daily life in the 14th century through interactive storytelling.
A dramatic setting above the Guadalquivir
Part of the festival’s appeal lies in the extraordinary setting of the castle itself. Perched on a hill overlooking the fertile Guadalquivir Valley, the fortress commands sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. From its ramparts, visitors can admire the landscape that once made this location strategically vital during medieval conflicts.
The castle’s imposing towers and walls, many of which date back to the Middle Ages, provide an authentic backdrop for the historical reenactments. As participants move through the fortress in costume, the event recreates the sense of a living medieval stronghold.
A fortress with a long history
Castillo de Almodóvar del Río has origins stretching back more than a thousand years. The current fortress was established in the 8th century during the period of Muslim rule in Al-Andalus, when it served as a strategic defensive stronghold controlling the Guadalquivir corridor.
During the Middle Ages, the castle underwent numerous reconstructions and played a role in conflicts between Christian and Muslim powers as well as rival Castilian factions. Kings such as Pedro I of Castile used it as a royal residence, and the fortress later became associated with noble families who preserved it for centuries.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the castle underwent an extensive restoration led by the Count of Torralva, ensuring its survival as one of the most impressive historic fortifications in Andalusia today.
A living castle experience
Today, Almodóvar del Río Castle is well known for its immersive visitor experiences, from dramatized tours and themed events to historical reenactments throughout the year. The medieval tournament forms part of this broader effort to connect visitors with the fortress’s rich past through interactive storytelling and live performances.
If you want to explore Andalusia’s historic castles, this event offers a rare opportunity to see a medieval fortress brought to life with the sights and sounds of its past.
