Schwerin Castle has been crowned the third most beautiful castle in Germany by the Google community, according to a recent ranking of Europe’s top 1,000 castles and palaces. The analysis, conducted by an agency in collaboration with travel provider TUI, evaluated over 20,000 structures based on Google reviews and social media engagement on platforms like Instagram and Flickr.
Historical significance
The castle, once the residence of the Dukes and Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, became part of the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2024 as the centerpiece of the residence ensemble. It ranks 27th in Europe overall.
The ranking considered average Google star ratings, the number of reviews, and popularity on social media, including Instagram hashtags and Flickr photo uploads. Schwerin Castle received an impressive 4.7 stars from 31,362 reviews, with four out of five reviewers awarding it five stars.

Top performers
In Germany, it trails only Neuschwanstein Castle and Heidelberg Castle. Europe-wide, the top spots go to Prague Castle, Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, and the Royal Palace in Madrid. However, Schwerin did not make the top 20 German castles for Instagram and Flickr activity, where Neuschwanstein, Eltz Castle, and Nymphenburg Palace led.
In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schwerin Castle is the standout, followed by Granitz Castle on Rügen with 4.5 stars from 9,265 reviews. Other regional entries in Europe’s top 1,000 include Wiligrad Castle, Ludwigslust Castle, Mirow Castle, and Stargard Castle.

Tourist appeal
This recognition underscores the castle’s status as a major tourist attraction, highlighting its beauty and cultural importance in the region.
