Schloss Gottorf, Germany, located in the Kreis Schleswig-Flensburg, has achieved a new visitor record with its special exhibition about Vikings which concluded over the weekend.

The exhibition Wikingerdämmerung. Zeitenwende im Norden drew a total of 53,322 visitors, marking the most successful special exhibition in the 26-year history of the Stiftung Schleswig-Holsteinische Landesmuseen Schloss Gottorf.
Record-breaking success
The record surpasses all previous special exhibitions hosted by the foundation, demonstrating strong public interest in archaeological and historical themes. The succes of the exposition involved the Museum für Archäologie Schloss Gottorf, the Wikinger Museum Haithabu, and the Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie (LEIZA). The castle, which houses two museums and a historic world globe, served as an ideal venue for this exploration of Viking history and the transformative period in the North.
Future exhibitions
Moving forward, the Museumsinsel in Schleswig will host its next major exhibition, “TORF,” featuring works by the internationally renowned artist Daniel Richter, scheduled to open on December 10, 2025.
